Sights in Poreč
In Poreč you will find many sights and cultural monuments. In particular, when visiting Poreč, you should visit Slobode Square and Marafor Square, the Euphrasian Basilica, the Baredine Cave and the Poreč Towers.
Slobode Square, also known as Freedom Square, can be reached through the dreamy and historic alleys of the city. You walk over the cobblestones, through branching alleys and enjoy the small cafés, boutiques, shops and ice cream parlors. The square is not only a popular starting point for a city tour, but also a popular venue for a variety of events.
In Marafor Square you will find the remains of the Temple of Neptune. From here it is not far to the harbour, where you can enjoy a coffee or a cool drink and let your gaze wander to the boats and yachts. The lively harbour promenade offers a lot of variety, many restaurants and cafés, bars, shops and stalls of traders. Various boat tours are offered for tourists, for example to watch dolphins.
The Euphrasian Basilica is very well preserved despite its age. It was built as early as the 6th century and owes its name to Bishop Euphrasius of Poreč. The basilica is an impressive monument of Byzantine art and inspires with beautiful wall and ceiling paintings made of mosaics and columns. The Euphrasian Basilica was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997.
The Baredine Cave is located not far from the town of Poreč and is located in the small town of Nova Vas. It is a unique stalactite cave that can be experienced on a guided tour. In the summer months, such tours take place every 30 minutes in German. You will descend about 60 meters into the depths and marvel at impressive stalactites and stalagmites on your way. With a bit of luck you will see some olms, which from time to time get from a deep cave lake into the accessible caves.
Of the original city walls and formerly 11 towers of Poreč, three are still preserved. The Pentagonal Tower is easily recognizable by the Venetian lion on the façade and is built towards the sea, it dates back to the time when Istria belonged to the Republic of Venice. The Round Tower, which was rebuilt in 1474, now houses a restaurant with a roof terrace and a beautiful view over the city, the island of Sveti Nikola and the beautiful harbour of Poreč. Today, only a ruin remains of the Northern Tower, which is connected to a part of the still preserved city wall.
You should also visit the unique aquarium in Poreč and the Forum Square, formerly called the Roman Forum, where you will find remains of Roman temples and the city walls. The original Roman paving of the square has also been preserved.
In Poreč you will also find several Gothic buildings located along the Decumanus Corso. In Palazzo Zuccato, for example, there is an art gallery. Buildings of later Romanesque architecture that are well worth seeing are the Canon’s House and the House of the Two Saints. The theatre building is located on Hafenstraße with a striking sculpture on the roof. The state parliament square, which was built in the 13th century as a Gothic church and baroque in the 18th century, is also worth seeing. Concerts and exhibitions are held here.
