The Baredine Cave – A magical natural wonder near Poreč
Just a few kilometres from Poreč lies a place that surprises, enchants and takes you into a world of its own: the Baredine stalactite cave. Since its opening in 1995, it has been one of the most popular natural sights in Istria – and for good reason. Every stalactite tells a story, every step leads deeper into millions of years of geological history.
An exciting path into the depths
The tour of the cave leads along a path about 300 meters long, which takes visitors up to 60 meters deep into the interior of the earth. On this special journey, you will pass through five impressive chambers:
- mystical stalactites & imposing stalagmites
- crystal clear water level
- the famous “Gardine”, an unusually shaped stalactite
- the popular stalactite snowman, a highlight for families
- bizarre, fairy-tale formations that only nature can create
Each of these chambers looks like its own room full of magic – quiet, cool and fascinating.
A rare species: the olm
The view into the underground lake of the cave is particularly exciting. There lives the rare olm, a blind, white-tailed amphibian that is only native to the karst caves of the Dinaric Mountains. This extraordinary and endangered species is a real highlight for nature lovers and a fascinating insight into the hidden wildlife beneath our feet.
Guided tours for every visitor
The stalactite cave can only be visited as part of a guided tour. The tours start:
- every 30 minutes
- last about 40 minutes
- and are offered in several languages
With a constant 14 degrees Celsius , there is a pleasant coolness here – ideal for a refreshing break on hot summer days.
A destination for the whole family
The cave is only 8 km away from Poreč, very accessible by car and has ample parking. In addition to the cave itself, the area offers a lot more:
- a cozy café
- a picnic area
- a small tractor museum
- a souvenir shop
This makes Baredine also ideal as a half-day trip with children.
